  Load shedding hits the manufacturing sector in Zambia. Jan11 th 2023. By Raphael Banda The Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) has noted   the efforts that the Government is putting in place to mitigate the challenges associated with load shedding in the country. In the statement, the association observed that hydro remains the main source of energy in Zambia contributing about 81.5% to the total national installed electricity capacity as of 2021. However, the Association expressed concern with the inconsistencies in the communication regarding the number of hours of load shedding and adherence thereto Load shedding came into effect on 3rd January 2023 . “ On 8th January 2023, another statement was issued announcing a reduction in the power outage period from 12 hours to 6 hours effect 9th January 2023.Despite this split in the power outage period, the effect on the sector is still immense.   Parliamentarians on Climate Change     First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Malungo Chisangano has called on members of Parliament to take keen interest matters of climate change in order to reduce its effects especially on vulnerable communities.     Speaking when she officiated a Climate Change lobby meeting for members of Parliament which was organized by the Civil Society for poverty reduction-CSPR in Lusaka today, Ms Chisangano said Parliament attached great importance to issues of climate change i  its work.     Ms Chisangano said the National Assembly of Zambia has over the years undertaken a number of measures to address climate beyond the confines of legislation and oversight in Parliament.      She said the establishment of the Zambian Parliamentary Caucus on  Environment and Climate Change -ZPCECC demonstrates its resolve to address the effects of climate change at Constituency...

  By Raphael Banda Zambia is part of the over 200 World leaders who have converged in Glasgow for the United Nations Climate Change Conference - COP26 to agree on how to  step up universal action   to solve the   climate catastrophe .   Nearly 30 years ago, global leaders came together to collectively address climate change and for the first time signed a  climate convention   that commit each to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.   From that time, parties have been meeting annually to discuss the progress and challenges apart from the year 2020 where the meeting was postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.   The ongoing Conferences of Parties (COP26) that commenced on October 31 st  to November 12 th  will among other things review progress on their commitments under the  Paris Agreement ’s  goal of keeping global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C.   United Kingdom...
